OES offers DVD-RAM technology to Taiwan companies
The Optoelectronics & Systems Laboratories (OES) has developed a DVD-RAM drive prototype and is now offering related technology to local manufacturers. The prototype is equipped with chipset, pick-up head, axial motor and loader from Matsushita. Many Taiwanese companies have expressed interest in acquiring the technology to develop these components themselves.
The OES is part of Taiwan’s Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI). It is also one of the class-A verification laboratories in the DVD Forum and took part in the establishment of the DVD-RAM standard. Therefore, it enjoys a portion of the patent rights for DVD-RAM. This, in effect, should reduce the licensing fee for technology transferred to Taiwanese companies.
