Youtube Uses AI to Keep Homepage "Clean"

Youtube Uses AI to Keep Homepage "Clean"

Enterprise & IT May 23,2019 0

Google is keeping Youtube's homepage clean of extreme and misleading videos by using an artificial intelligence sofware that scans video content.

The software analyzes reams of video footage, deciphers troubling clips and blocks them from the homepage and home screen of the app. Th egoal is to keep "trashy" videos away from Youtube's homepage, avoiding potential criticism and also keeping viewers on YouTube’s homepage, in order to be an attractive space for video advertisers. Esrlier this month, Alphabet Inc.’s Google released new advertising features that target YouTube’s growing direct audience. Marketers can run promotions on smartphones as users scroll through YouTube’s app.

Besides screening videos for the YouTube homepage, the AI sofwtware also analyzes feedback from users who report videos that are misleading, have been posted solely for clickbait and or are sensational. It also taps other data on audience retention, likes and dislikes.

Despite efforts, machines are still not "smart" enough to accurately recognize both the content and context of videos -- what happens and what is said inside video footage automatically. Such calculations are possible, but they will probably still have a lot of errors.
