Samsung Galaxy Fold Coming in September
Samsung Electronics will begin selling its Galaxy Fold in September, after the launch of the device was delayed due to defects in the gadget’s much-touted flexible screen.
Samsung says it has taken the time to fully evaluate the product design, make necessary improvements and run tests to validate the changes made. These design and construction improvements include:
- The top protective layer of the Infinity Flex Display has been extended beyond the bezel, making it apparent that it is an integral part of the display structure and not meant to be removed.
- Galaxy Fold features additional reinforcements to better protect the device from external particles:The top and bottom of the hinge area have been strengthened with newly added protection caps.
- Additional metal layers underneath the Infinity Flex Display have been included to reinforce the protection of the display.
- The space between the hinge and body of Galaxy Fold has been reduced.
Along with these improvements, Samsung has also been working to improve the overall Galaxy Fold user experience, including optimizing more apps and services for its foldable UX.
Samsung says it conducting final product tests to make Galaxy Fold available to consumers starting from September in select markets.
Galaxy Fold allows you to access your essentials on the cover display while holding Galaxy Fold in one hand, and open it up to use multiple apps at once. With Galaxy Fold, you can also review charts while talking on a video call, and search information, all at once.
Samsung canceled the April 26 launch of the $1,980 device after the folding displays on review models exhibited problems.
Samsung is trying to steal a march on Chinese rivals Xiaomi and Huawei Technologies, which are trying to put out their own devices to stake a claim to a potentially massive market.
In June, Huawei also delayed the launch of its foldable Mate X to September to conduct more testing.
Foldable Smartphones by LG
LG Electronics has also registered trademarks with Korean intellectual property authorities for the names of its future foldable smartphones.
The company has submitted two trademark applications in Korea, which seem to be related to its foldable smartphone. On July 8, LG Electronics had the names “LG Arc” and “LG Folds” recorded at the Korean Intellectual Property Rights Information Service (KIPRIS). Both applications have since been approved and classified as Class 9.
Both applications are described as ‘mobile phone; smartphone touch pen; LED display.’
In October 2018, the company’s CEO announced that they are developing a foldable smartphone, although the company immediately stated that it was too early for it to actually introduce a folding phone.
A month later the company registered several trademarks for the names “LG Flex,” “Foldi,” “Duplex” and “LG Bendi.”
