Facebook Introduces a Faster and Simpler Messenger

Facebook Introduces a Faster and Simpler Messenger

Smartphones Mar 2,2020 0

Facebook will be rolling out a faster, smaller and simpler Messenger on iOS over the next few weeks.

Messenger first became its own app in 2011. Since then, Facebook has added video calling, GIFs, location sharing and more. Noe Facebook believes that people turn to messaging apps throughout the day to stay in touch with the people they care about so it’s important the app loads quickly and is simple to use. On the heels of Messenger 4, the company started a journey to simplify and redesign Messenger, internally called Project LightSpeed, and now by rebuilting the iOS app from the ground up.

Facebook promises that the new Messenger will load twice as fast compared to the previous version of Messenger on iOS and will be also one-fourth its original size.

The app is also smaller, meaning it should start, download and update faster for everyone, including people who use the app on older devices or in areas with lower connectivity where every kilobyte counts.

Facebook has also streamlined the app while keeping it rich with features. For example, The company hasreduced the contact list from 40 versions to one that works consistently across the app.

Facebook says it reduced Messenger’s core code by 84% — going from 1.7+ million lines of code to 360,000 — and has rebuilt the features to fit a new, simplified infrastructure. As part of the rebuild, a few features will be temporarily unavailable, but they will be brought back soon.
