Maxell warns users about "fake" DVD-R media with Maxell's ID code

Maxell warns users about "fake" DVD-R media with Maxell's ID code

Optical Storage Sep 3,2004 0

Maxell Japan posted a press release today, complaining that some Taiwaneze DVD-R media manufacturers are using Maxell's DVD-R ID Codes for enable 4X DVD-R writing to their media... The problem is rather complex and according to Maxell such practises are bad for Maxell's image towards users. Maxell warns users to buy only Maxell branded media that are "Made In Japan" and that legal measurements will be taken upon those who use illegal, Maxell's ID codes.

The following text comes translated from Maxell's Japanese website through babelfish so there will be errors...

"...I checked that there was a DVD-R disk which used the manufacturer recognition code of our company for the goods currently sold with the Taiwan private brand unfairly recently. All the DVD-R disks in which the regular manufacturer recognition code of our company was described first of all are "made in Japan", and oversea production announces you all.

Since it may be very regrettable as our company and I may make trouble for you, a drive maker and a general user, about this case, I will explain about the view of the fact made clear from the following contents now, and our company.

(1) About a disk

The disk which our company makes the problem this time is the DVD-R disk which used the manufacturer recognition code of our company unfairly. A manufacturer recognition code is fixed among drive makers, and is recorded on the disk from the beginning. The record drive read this code, has taken the system recorded on the conditions united with the characteristic of each company disk, and is maintaining the compatibility of each company record drive and each company disk, and the quality of a record signal.

Although the disk which our company makes the problem is using the same manufacturer recognition code as correspondence DVD-R disks, such as our company, our company is completely unrelated and it is made, using the manufacturer recognition code of our company without notice. Although this disk uses our company manufacturer recognition code unfairly and is sold as 1-4X correspondence in the market, as a result of evaluating by our company, the quality set to the standard in fact is not satisfied, cannot write a disk normally or is checking generating of the trouble where reproduction is normally impossible etc. moreover, the manufacturer recognition code used unfairly this time -- a stenographic record -- since it is a code for disks, I also generate the trouble of 4X [ which is stated by the package ] writing not being made

In addition, in lighting software, Maxell may be displayed as a manufacture maker of the disk concerned, and you, a user, are made to produce misapprehension as if it was the products of our company in part. This is because the manufacture maker name which corresponds from the manufacturer (used improperly) recognition code which the drive read is displayed, and is not the product of our company in practice.

(2) Correspondence of our company

As mentioned above, it is regrettable to use unfairly the manufacturer recognition code used as the origin of the quality of DVD-R, and reliance of the DVD-R disk itself is shaken.

Therefore, by our company, countermeasures are already hastened to unjust use of the quality Maxell manufacturer recognition code. In addition, about the damage produced on the visitor based on use of the DVD-R disk concerned, since our company cannot take responsibility, I ask you to advise.

In a visitor, the above contents are understood, and in order to use goods in comfort, I ask you later again to use "Maxell brand DVD-R" currently sold from our company..."
