Sony reverses decision to close PS3, Vita game stores

Sony reverses decision to close PS3, Vita game stores

Gaming Apr 20,2021 0

Sony admits that it "made the wrong decision" when it announced plans to close the PlayStation 3 and Vita game stores.

"The wrong decision"
Last month, Sony announced its decision to close the PlayStation Store on PS3, Vita, and PSP will close in July/August 2021. PlayStation 3 was sold until 2017 and Sony's decision drew ire from many users.

The company has now reversed course for PS3 and Vita. The PSP store is still planned to be shut down this summer.

- "Upon further reflection, however, it’s clear that we made the wrong decision here. So today I’m happy to say that we will be keeping the PlayStation Store operational for PS3 and PS Vita devices. PSP commerce functionality will retire on July 2, 2021 as planned," said Jim Ryan, President & CEO, Sony Interactive Entertainment.

After having launched PlayStation 5, Sony has been eager to abandon its older platform saying that its ambition is to transition the community "at a scale and pace that we've never delivered on before".

The company said that users will be able to purchase "games on PS3 and PS Vita for the foreseeable future" but did not commit to a specific timeframe.

It is another reminder that digital content is available only as long as the platform owner wants it be. Make your voice heard.
