Conclusion

All in all, a very impressive device. The graphics, especially in the 3D department, is as good as it gets. The software in the bundle is quite extensive and includes both full and trial versins of some nifty applications, including games. Any downfalls had more to do with the operating system rather than the device itself, but this is to be expected from a new release OS such as WM 5.0.

Dell was very responsive to emails about some of the issues we encountered – they immediately offered to send out a new unit and told me a ROM update would be issued which should address these issues.

The Dell Axim x51v is available at www.dell.com for US$499.00. There are always coupons on Dealcatcher and Dealnews and other coupon web sites, along with promotions from Dell which should lower the price.

Pros

  • Windows Mobile 5.0
  • 256MB ROM
  • VGA Screen
  • Dual Memory Slots (CF/SD)
  • Better Battery Life than X50V
  • Intel 2700G graphics accelerator
  • Same Sexy Design as X50 series
  • Nice bundle of included software

Cons

  • Battery life was a dissapointment
  • No Jog Dial
  • Little need to upgrade. With the ability to upgrade X50v to WM5, current X50v owners only real gain is 128MB of extra storage
  • Minor issues with WM5 (not really Dell's fault)
