Dell Offers SLC and MLC SSDs In A Single Storage Box

Dell Offers SLC and MLC SSDs In A Single Storage Box

PC components Jun 6,2013 0

At its Dell Enterprise Forum customer and partner event, Dell today unveiled new storage solutions based on both MLC and SLC SSDs, with data automatically moved between those two tiers of storage. Dell has modified the auto-tiering software for its Compellent line of large-scale storage arrays to automatically move data from SLC (single-level cell) solid-state disks to those made with MLC (multilevel cell) technology.

MLC drives can typically pack more data into a given space and are cheaper per bit than SLC, but they can't be filled with new data as quickly or as many times.

Dell announced the upcoming releases for the Dell Compellent platform, including Storage Center 6.4 array software, the new Flash-optimized solution, the new SC280 dense enclosure and the FS8600 with FluidFS v3.

Dell Compellent Storage Center 6.4 is enabling new tiers of storage. The software tiers sub-LUN data across traditional rotating drives, write-optimized SSDs, and read-optimized SSDs. You can look at tiering like an automated workflow that knows which "packages" of data require "immediate express delivery" and places them on that first tier (SLC instance flash) and which "packages" of data can be safely stored on less expensive and slightly slower second tiers (MLC SSD).

Dell claims that the new Compellent Flash-optimized solution enables all-flash performance while reducing costs by up to 75 percent compared to other flash-optimized solutions by automatically tiering data across write-intensive SLC and read-intensive MLC SSDs. The software works in an all-flash or a hybrid-flash configuration based on the requirements.

Storage Center 6.4 also incorporates the new Fluid File System (FluidFS) v3 updates for the FS8600 NAS, offering scale-out performance and intelligent data reduction for file storage. FluidFS v3 will support up to 2PB in a single namespace, approximately 2x increase over FluidFS v2. With the deduplication and compression capabilities of the FS8600 NAS, you no longer have to pay to store the same file multiple times and you can maximize the use of your space.

Dell Fluid File System v3 has planned availability for early Q4 2013.

The Dell Compellent SC280 can store up to 336 terabytes (84x 4TB) in a 5U footprint.

Both the Dell Compellent Storage Center 6.4, Flash Optimized Solution and SC280 enclosure will be available in Q3 2013.
