JSAUX Modcase PC0104
4. Tests / Conclusion
The external Cooling fan (GP0200) is supposed to give the steam deck a further boost in cooling performance compared with the stock fan solution since it creates a negative volume and ejects produced heat much faster.
To test this, we used Unigine_Superposition-1.1 benchmark and with the latest HWInfo64 software, we monitored the internal CPU temps and RPM fan speed with low and high-speed fan settings.
The above graph shows how a typical gaming load would perform more or less. The Steam Deck with the JSAUX Clear Shell installed reached around 74 Celsius max speed. However, with the external cooling fan, we do see a performance improvement up to 10 Celsius (max speed), while even the low speed (5 Celsius difference) does help overall cooling performance. When the test stops, we do see a faster drop in temperatures with the Steam Deck installed, compared with no external cooling fan installed.
How about internal fan speeds? As we expected the internal fan speed has a lot of work to do to reduce CPU temperatures. The external cooling fan does reduce up to 50% the RPM of the internal cooling fan, however, it does add to the overall noise, since it also has its own noise levels.
- Conclusion
The JSAUX Mod Case system does offer something new to the SteamDeck accessories market with very good overall protection (both back and front) and in addition several different mounting solutions for external power banks, coolers, docking stations, external SSDs, and many more you can think off. The building quality is very good, and we have no complains, but the extra protection does add to the overall weight of the Steam Deck.
For our tests, we received the Cooler combo kit that included both the ModCase and an External cooling solution. The external cooling solution is cleverly designed with its own battery (so you get the maximum play time), charges through USB Type C, and can fit in both "normal" SteamDeck (without any case) and with the Mod case of course.
The test results were very good and for sure the external cooling solution will keep temperatures under control, especially at high-speed mode. If you also use headphones, probably this won't affect your gaming experience after all.
The retail price of the Cooler Combo is around $49.99 and in our opinion is a great buy especially if you plan to buy the ModCase + something to help with the cooling efficiency of the Steam Deck. Of course, you can also buy both pieces individually ($29.99 for the basic set and $35.99 for the cooler alone) so we feel you should get the Cooler combo instead.
Perhaps in the future JSAUX will further improve the mod case system by redesigning the back protection shell for users who have already the JSAUX clear back shell with its big passive heatsink for the sacrifice of the back stand.
