MWC: HMD Global Launches Nokia 9 PureView Smartphone With Five-camera Array
HMD Global, the Finnish company that owns the rights to use the Nokia brand for mobile phones, has launched five new spmartphones today at MWC 2019, including the Nokia 9 PureView, which packs two 12 megapixel color sensors and three 12 megapixel monochrome sensors.
The Nokia 9 PureView heads the new range of smartphones announced by HMD on Sunday, including an entry-level device and two mid-level handsets, all designed to work with Google’s Android One, which guarantees two years’ of operating system upgrades.
Nokia 9 PureView
Starting at the top of the line, HMD has unveiled the Nokia 9 PureView, which has "the most advanced photography system ever on a smartphone" thanks to five 12MP cameras that it says capture images simultaneously, with the smartphone then fusing them together.
The device is sporting 2 x 12-megapixel Zeiss color cameras color and 3 x 12-megapixel monochrome (black and white) sensors.
"It's the only camera in world capable of capturing multiple images at different exposure levels at the same time," HMD head of Global Portfolio and Product Planning Pranav Shroff told media.
All five cameras work as a system — when you snap a photo, they fire simultaneously and “layer up” to create a more detailed and clear image.
Monochrome cameras capture only black-and-white, thus they have no filter. This means they can capture more light than a color sensor can — roughly three times more. The result is better photos, particularly in low-light situations.
For the Nokia 9 PureView, HMD Global worked with algorithmic imaging company Light.
The Nokia 9 PureView also features the ability to capture images in uncompressed RAW “DNG” format and edit them directly on the phone yourself thanks to our partnership with Adobe Lightroom.
In terms of design, the device sports a 6000 series aluminum chassis, with dual-tone anodization on the metal, and Gorilla Glass 5 on the front and back.
It is based on the Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 mobile platform with dedicated ASIC; has a 5.99-inch 2K 18:9 OLED screen; an under-display fingerprint sensor; a biometric face-unlock system; 6GB of RAM / 128GB of storage; a 3,300mAh battery; wireless charging; and no headphone jack.
The top-of-the-line smartphone will ship next week, and is priced at $699.
