Philips' Veeza Licensing Scheme Scores Points in China
Philips' licensing system, Veeza, for blank DVD Recordable discs has been reportedly accepted by four China-based makers of DVD+R blank media.
Three of the four China-based makers include Jilin Qingda Digital, Shenzen SG & SAST Digital Optical Discs and Anyang Fongen Multimedia Technology, Digitimes.com reports citing sources from the Taiwanese industry.
Phlips has been struggling to persuade optical disc makers in both China and Taiwan to adopt the Veeza licencing sceme. Veeza was created some years ago, offering lower licensing fees for CD-R and DVD Recordable media, as well as other advantages compared to the previous licensing scheme. However, Veeza did not have the estimated acceptance in China, with the majority of the local DVD makers to ask for even lower fees. Currently, Philips seems to have found the way to negotiate with Chinese makers through the Optical Disc Working Commission (ODWC) of the government-supported China Audio & Video Association.
