Samsung Introduces 2GHz Dual-core Exynos 5250 Application Processor

Samsung Introduces 2GHz Dual-core Exynos 5250 Application Processor

PC components Nov 30,2011 0

Samsung has developed the Exynos 5250 applications processor (AP), a dual-core chip running at 2.0 GHz and based on ARM's Cortex-A15 design. The Exynos 5250 was built using a 32nm low-power HKMG (high-k metal gate, High-K Metal Gate) process and offers almost twice the performance of a 1.5GHz dual-core Cortex-A9 processor. According to Samsung, the Exynos 5250 is able to process 14,000 DMIPS.

Primarily designed for the high-end tablet PC market, the processor supports ultra-high resolution WQXGA (2560 x 1600) displays. In addition, the 3D graphics processing speed of the new AP is four times higher than the Cortex-A9, by taking advantage of a 12.8GBytes/sec memory bandwidth.

In addition, the processor includes the Panel Self-Refresh (PSR) feature developed to save system power and further extend battery life in portable PC systems. PSR mode allows GPU to enter power saving state in between frame updates by including framebuffer memory in the display panel controller.

Samsung plans to start mass production of the new processor in the second quarter of 2012.
