Samsung To Release New Smartwatch: report
Samsung Electronics plans to unveil a new Tizen-based smartwatch rumored to have a round design, a bezel ring and wireless charging capabilities.
According to sources from South korea, the tech giant aims to unveil the new circular smart watch, codenamed "Orbis," together with the new version of its flagship Galaxy smartphone, at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona from March 2-5.
The decice will have a circular face, while a rotating bezel ring around the edge will be used to navigate through menus. The display is designed to show apps on the home screen ― either one at a time, or three depending on how quickly you rotate the bezel ring, the report added.
Another key feature of the new device is expected to be wireless charging, considering some people are still avoiding a smart watch because of its short battery life.
Consumers have already applauded the circular displays of the Moto 360 from Motorola and the G Watch R from LG Electronics.
So far, Samsung's 3 wrist watches ― the Gear, Gear 2, and Gear S ― were square-shaped, under the strict concept of smart device rather than traditional wrist watch.
Apple is also scheduled to launch an all-new Apple Watch in April, while traditional watchmakers like Swatch are also making a foray into the market. The Apple watch will reportedly come in two different sizes. Each model uses different glass on the watch face, but the standard Apple Watch and Gold Watch Edition use sapphire crystal glass that can withstand scrapes and scratches. Apple Watch Sport will use Ion-X Glass, as the ion-strengthened glass is more resistant to falls.
LG Electronics, too, is likely to unveil the new model of its G Watch R at the MWC.
