Sharp Develops Laser Semiconductor Capable of 16x DVD±R DL Writing
Sharp announced the "GH16P35A8C", a red laser powerful enough to support recording on DVD±R DL discs at 16x.
The company will start shipments of the new component later this month. Sample price is set at 4,000 yen.
The laser achieves a maximum output power of 350mW while its just 1.8mm thin, making it ideal for both half height drives for PCs and notebook drives.
Writng on DVD±R DL media requires high-power lasers. In case of high speed recording such as the 16x, the requirements are even higher. In addition, the laser should be able to operate at high temperatures. Sharp said that its new laser semiconductor is capable of outputting 350mW under temperatures of 80℃.
