TDK Introduces DVD/CD Media Featuring HP LightScribe Technology

TDK Introduces DVD/CD Media Featuring HP LightScribe Technology

Optical Storage Jan 9,2005 0

New Ultimate-Performance Discs Can Be Labeled by the Same Drive Laser That Records Data At CES 2005, TDK, a world leader in digital recording announced it has entered into a licensing agreement with Hewlett-Packard (HP) that authorizes TDK to provide TDK-branded recordable DVD and CD media featuring HP’s proprietary LightScribe Direct Disc Labeling technology. LightScribe technology enables laser etched silkscreen-quality labels on DVDs and CDs with the same drive that records the data. Customers simply burn the data side of a disc, flip the disc over and then burn text and graphics on the label side.

Chris Bailey, TDK Director of Recording Media, noted, "TDK recordable DVD and CD media featuring LightScribe technology makes it exceptionally easy for our customers to create custom-labeled discs with a professionally produced appearance." He continued, "Because no extra supplies are required, TDK discs with LightScribe are an especially affordable and convenient alternative to using a labeling kit and consuming expensive printer ink."

LightScribe recordable discs can be used in computers with burners that are already configured for use with LightScribe media, or consumers can separately purchase a LightScribe-enabled burner for installation into a computer they already own. Because the same laser is used to both record and label the disc, LightScribe-enabled drives are attractively priced.

The LightScribe Direct Disc Labeling system is a breakthrough in disc labeling technology, providing consumers and businesses with a customizable, easy-to-use solution for labeling CDs and DVDs without the need for a printer or adhesive paper labels. Using a combination of LightScribe-enabled media, recordable drives and software, customers can burn to the data side of the disc, then flip the disc over and burn a silkscreen-quality label with text and graphics to the label side using the very same laser.

LightScribe-compatible products carry a special LightScribe logo for easy identification on store shelves. Recording software is supplied with each burner, and facilitates creating custom label designs with detailed, high-resolution text and images. Manufactured to Certified Plus quality standards, TDK LightScribe discs ensure unrivaled reliability, along with bit-accurate recording and playback. Consumers get the best of both worlds: renowned TDK data integrity combined with a convenient labeling system that delivers high-quality results.

TDK 8x DVD+R and 52x CD-R media featuring LightScribe technology will be available in early 2005. Estimated street prices are as follows: 52x CD-R in slim jewel case (1 disc), $1.19; 52x CD-R in 10-disc spindles, $11.90; 8x DVD+R in slim jewel case (1 disc), $1.69; 8x DVD+R in 10-disc spindles, $16.90.
