Thomson announces new enhanced Video and Audio features from seven-model lineup from Thomson

Thomson announces new enhanced Video and Audio features from seven-model lineup from Thomson

General Interest Jun 24,2002 0

As the consumer electronics industry celebrates the five-year anniversary of the DVD, Thomson is expanding its commitment to this fast-growing category with the introduction of seven new RCA brand DVD players. The full-featured lineup, including two progressive scan units with 3:2 pulldown, a five-disc changer, a portable player with seven-inch screen and a DVD/VCR combination unit, pairs outstanding video and audio performance with a variety of unique convenience capabilities. Six of the seven new DVD players offer Digital PhotoView, which enables playback of JPEG files from a CD-R/RW disc in a slideshow format with rotating capability on a television. Other features shared by all players include Dolby Digital and DTS compatibility, Scene Again (one button instant replay), and CD-R/RW, mp3, Video CD and DVD+R/RW playback.

"Thomson's global DVD strategy enables us to capitalize on our worldwide resources to deliver high quality, full-featured DVD products," said Al Arras, Senior Executive Vice President, Worldwide Audio, Video and ATLINKS Strategic Business Unit. "With the growth of the DVD category and the large assortment of choices for consumers, it is essential to differentiate and provide unique features that consumers want. The new RCA DVD lineup, with features such as Digital Photoview, DCDi progressive scan technology, and exclusive mp3PRO audio decoding, delivers convenience and performance advantages," he added.

Progressive Scan DVD Players Deliver Better Images

When connected to a digital television set, a progressive scan DVD player delivers a higher quality image than a standard DVD player. With progressive scan, the entire image is written at one time, rather than being split into two, as happens with an interlaced image. The result is less artifacts and a crisp, true-to-life image.

Providing a dramatically crisp picture, RCA DVD model DRC480N incorporates Faroudja Directional Correlational Deinterlacing (DCDi) progressive scan technology that produces smoother and more natural images while eliminating jagged edges on interlaced video. This full-featured progressive scan DVD player also has an mp3PRO decoder that supports playback of CD-quality mp3PRO music files. Nuon Technology inside the player enables a number of new features such as full scale zoom from 0.5x to 15x, Smart Resume (that remembers where disc playback stopped on up to 10 discs), voice enhancement (that brings up the dialogue during noisy background scenes), and Virtual Light Machine (that creates colorful images on the television screen to complement the type of music being played on a CD or mp3 disc.) The Nuon processor also provides additional JPEG viewing options including simultaneous mp3 and JPEG playback (for adding music to the picture show), navigation of JPEG and mp3 files in the same directory, zoom and pan of JPEG images, and rotation of JPEG pictures by 90, 180 and 270 degrees.

Model DRC480N, with a new slim-design cabinet, has one set of gold A/V composite jacks, a component video output, S-Video and optical and coaxial digital output jacks. Model DRC480N will be available in August. The suggested retail price is $249.

The second progressive scan player, RCA DVD model DRC350N, has 1.5x 2x and 4x zoom capability, five-disc memory, and virtual surround sound. Connections include a component video output, S-Video output, one set of A/V composite jacks, and optical and coaxial digital audio output jack. Model DRC350N is available now at retail. The suggested retail price is $209.

DVD Changer, Nuon Technology, Component Video Outputs

The RCA DVD model DRC500N provides hours of music and video entertainment with features such as a five-disc DVD/CD changer that features one-disc memory, special effects, zoom, random play and 30-minute auto off. The connection package includes: two sets of RCA audio output jacks, one composite video jack, a component video output, S-Video output, optical and coaxial digital output jack, and headphone jack with volume control. Model DRC500N is now available at retail. The suggested retail price is $229.

RCA DVD model DRC300N is the second player with mp3PRO and Nuon Technology and has the same Nuon processor powered features as the DRC480N such as full-scale zoom and special music and photo effects. This unit also has a jog shuttle control for fast forward and reverse and 30-minute auto off. Connections include two sets of composite video outputs, component video output, S-Video output, headphone jack with volume control and optical and coaxial digital audio output jack. Model DRC300N will be available this summer. The suggested retail price is $199.

The final stand-alone player is the RCA DVD model DRC220N, which features 1x - 4x zoom, five disc memory, SRS TruSurround and 30-minute auto off. The player has component video output, headphone jack with volume control, optical and coaxial digital output jack, S-Video output and one set of A/V composite jacks. The DRC220N is now available at retail. The suggested retail price is $179.

More Options With DVD/VCR Combo and Portable DVD

The latest DVD/VCR combination unit is the RCA model DRC6000N, a space-saving solution for any video enthusiast. The DVD player has special effects such as multi-speed fast forward/rewind and multi-speed slow motion, zoom, and SRS TruSurround, while the VHS Hi-Fi VCR incorporates VCR Plus+ for easy recording of favorite programs and auto-clock set (to prevent the "blinking 12:00"). This model also has a coaxial digital output jack, front A/V composite jack, RF input/output jack, S-Video output, component output and one set of A/V composite jacks. Model DRC6000N will be available in August. The suggested retail price is $329.

The new RCA portable DVD player can provide hours of video and audio entertainment on the road. RCA DVD model DRC600N, with a suggested retail price of $549, boasts a seven-inch widescreen LCD display and will play for over three hours from a rechargeable lithium-ion battery. This portable movie theatre has a five-disc memory and special effects. The lightweight unit, weighing under two pounds, also contains a mini-optical digital output jack, headphone jack with volume control, and S-Video and A/V composite jacks. A convenient "credit card" sized remote is also included. The RCA DRC600N will be available in August.
