Toshiba Announces New Solid State Hybrid Drives, Detachable Z20 2-IN-1 PC, FlashAir III Wireless SD Card
Toshiba has just announced its new solid state hybrid drive (SSHD) series, which is equipped with Toshiba's 19nm second-generation NAND flash memory (NAND). The new MQ02ABD100H SSHD offers 1TB capacity in a drive 9.5mm high, while the MQ02ABF050H offers a capacity of 500GB in a 7mm high form factor.
Toshiba's latest SSHDs deliver better performance compared to a traditional hard disk drive (HDD) because the drives feature NAND that is used as the secondary cache during operation. This means customers see improvement to the drive’s performance compared to an HDD, while still maintaining the equivalent capacities of traditional HDDs.
Toshiba’s new generation SSHDs merge the NAND controller function into the main HDD controller chip. This all-in-one system on chip (SoC) for the MQ02ABD/ABF-H series enables more integrated management of the HDD and NAND operation compared to previous SSHDs (MQ01ABD-H and MQ01ABF-H series) that featured separate NAND and HDD controller chips.
Toshiba’s NAND controller technologies unleash the NAND capabilities such as defective block management, ECC (Error Correction Code), conversion of logical block address, and wear-leveling.
This new generation SSHD also offers compatibility in both physical size and interface with a traditional 2.5-inch HDD.
Toshiba will start offering shipping samples of the new drives from February 2015.
Toshiba also today announced the Portégé Z20t, a premium 2-in-1 detachable PC with high-precision pen input designed for a wide range of uses. An Ultrabook and tablet in one, the device features a 12.5-inch Full HD IPS detachable display, a thin design and a reversible keyboard dock that offers users the flexibility to use it in any situation. It is powered by Intel's Core M processor and pen technologies by Wacom and offers up to a 17.4-hour battery life rating.
The tablet weighs only 1.6 pounds and when combined with the keyboard dock, 3.3 pounds. The keyboard dock features a simple hinge mechanism that allows the tablet to be detached with one hand. The attachment mechanism is also reversible, enabling a presentation mode for showing content to a group of people.
The device features the new M.2 SSD interface and can be configured with a with a 128GB or 256GB solid state drive and up to 8GB of on-board LPDDR3 memory. It also features a full array of sensors, including ambient light, gyroscope and an e-compass. The device also includes wireless capabilities, including 802.11ac Wi-Fi and Bluetooth v4.0.
The Portégé Z20t offers a number of features designed to keep a business' critical data safe, including Toshiba's EasyGuard suite. A Kensington lock port is included, which can secure the keyboard to desks and ensures the tablet cannot be detached when docked. Trusted Platform Module (TPM) safeguards the data on local storage, while Intel Active Management Technology (AMT) allows IT departments to monitor, maintain, repair, update and upgrade machines remotely.
The Portégé Z20t is easy to manage within corporate IT environments through Microsoft System Center Configuration Manager (SCCM), Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI), Toshiba Cloud Client Manager (TCCM) and Toshiba Smart Client Manager 2.0 (TSCM).
The Portégé Z20t will be available for purchase in January 2015, starting at $1,399.00 MSRP. The Portégé WT20, sold without the digitizer and keyboard base will be available in February2015 starting at $899.00 MSRP.
Toshiba has also introduced the FlashAir III Wireless SD Card, a third generation memory card that serves as its own wireless LAN access point, allowing users to share images, videos and files wirelessly.
The FlashAir III delivers speedy data transfers so users can quickly upload their images and videos. The FlashAir III Wireless SD Card’s Internet pass-through feature allows users to access the card and Internet (via your separate wireless router) simultaneously – enabling the ability to upload images in real-time. Using a wireless LAN chip, The FlashAir III Wireless SD Card is accessible to any wireless capable computers, smartphones or tablets, and can support simultaneous access from up to seven devices. In addition, the built-in Wi-Fi access point also allows for transfers without an Internet connection.
Toshiba also offers a free FlashAir mobile app that makes it easy to share via iOS and Android-based devices. The FlashAir III Wireless SD Card is backed by a five-year standard limited warranty.
The Toshiba FlashAir III Wireless SD Card will be available for purchase in March, 2015 for $79.99 MSRP for 16GB4 and $99.99 for 32GB.
And for all those who are using portable HDDs, Toshiba is proposing the 3TB Canvio Basics storage lineup.
The portable drive can be connected to a PC right out of the box. It supports USB 3.0, is backwards compatible with USB 2.0 and is also equipped with a special internal shock sensor and ramp loading technology designed to keep digital files safer against accidental drops.
The 3TB Toshiba Canvio Basics portable hard drive will be available for purchase in March 2015 for $189.99 MSRP.
