Sony's Video Server Records 8 TV Broadcasts Simultaneously

The Sony Vaio video server is capable of recording programs from up to 8 TV channels at the same time. The device features 8 ground analog TV tuners and will be available in Japan late October. Sony has announced two versions of the device. The VGX-XV40S is equipped with four ground analog tuners while the VGX-XV80S features 8 tuners. Both devices use a hard disk drive to store the recorded contents. The VGX-XV40S comes with a 250GB HDD, and the VGX-XV80S can be either have a 500GB or a larger 1TB HDD. Their prices have been set to 89,800 Yen (US $786.546, 250GB), 149,800 Yen (US $1,312.07, 500GB) and 299,800 Yen (US $2,625.90, 1TB), respectively. It is not clear whether the device will be available outside Japan.

Sony's video server should be connected to a PC and in order to be controlled through Sony's software. Channel tuning, recording programming as well as playback of all 8 TV channels is supported through the software application. Basic control features can be set through a remote control.



The video streams can be recorded at MPEG 2 at 1.25Mbps (352x240), 2.5Mbps (352x480), 4Mbps (720x480) and 6Mbps (720x480).

The device weigh about 7.6kg-10.0kg, and its size is 430 x 380 x 87mm (w x d x h). Sony showcases the 'X video station' at CEATEC 4-7 October, Chiba Japan. Additional information is available at Sony Vaio website.
