Adaptec Optimizes Performance of Ultra320 SCSI

Adaptec Optimizes Performance of Ultra320 SCSI

Enterprise & IT Jan 9,2002 0

Adaptec today unveiled a technology at the heart of a new ASIC that optimizes Ultra320 SCSI performance by bolstering data transfer rates and minimizing the overhead of handling data and commands under the Ultra320 SCSI protocol. Adaptec's new Seamless Streaming technology maximizes Ultra320 SCSI data transfer rates by allowing a SCSI target, such as a disk drive, to stream packets of data for different commands with minimum switching time. To streamline data and command management, Seamless Streaming technology sends multiple commands in a single connection (Ultra160 technology allows the transfer of just one command per connection), eliminates latency between the commands and allows up to 512 commands to be rapidly retrieved from its matrix command management queue.

"With Seamless Streaming technology, Adaptec is pushing Ultra320 SCSI performance to its theoretical limit," said Lee Caswell, vice president and general manager of Adaptec's Storage Solutions Group. "This technology is another example of how Adaptec is leveraging industry standards as a baseline for developing innovative solutions."

Seamless Streaming technology is at the core of Adaptec's new Ultra320 SCSI ASIC - the AIC-7902 - a dual-channel chip that is the foundation for a broad family of Adaptec Ultra320 SCSI and Ultra320 SCSI RAID controllers to begin launching early this year, as well as a key building block of a complete Ultra320 SCSI solution. The chip supports all major operating systems and offers a forward pin-compatible path from the AIC-7899W for easy migration from Ultra160 to Ultra320 SCSI.

The AIC-7902 also is deployed on Adaptec's new Ultra320 SCSI host bus adapter - the Adaptec 39320 SCSI card - a next-generation 64-bit/133MHz PCI-X to SCSI product that supports up to 30 SCSI devices across two Ultra320 SCSI channels to provide 640 MBps of SCSI bandwidth. The 39320 sports two external very high-density connector interfaces (VHDCI) and one internal high-density 68-pin connector to provide users with a wide variety of connection options.

For robust data protection, the AIC-7902 features embedded hardware mirroring and supports RAID levels 0, 1, and 1/0. The ASIC also supports Adaptec's unique EMRL (Embedded RAID Logic) technology to provide the lowest risk transition path to Ultra320 SCSI RAID for high-density servers now using zero channel technology.

The AIC-7902 and the first of Adaptec's Ultra320 SCSI and RAID cards are now sampling in conjunction with leading Ultra320 hard disk drives. Adaptec's first Ultra320 SCSI host bus adapter will be commercially available this quarter and its first Ultra320 SCSI RAID controller next quarter.
