WORLD’S FIRST DIGITAL CABLE PVR COMBINATION SHIPS WITH MAXTOR’S 80 GB

WORLD’S FIRST DIGITAL CABLE PVR COMBINATION SHIPS WITH MAXTOR’S 80 GB

Enterprise & IT Sep 5,2002 0

Maxtor Corporation (NYSE: MXO), announced that Scientific-Atlanta, a leading supplier of cable set-top boxes, has selected Maxtor QuickView® consumer electronics hard drives for its Explorer 8000 home entertainment servers, the first integrated set-top box (STB) and personal video recorder (PVR) from a major cable set-top box manufacturer. In one easily installed box, the Explorer 8000 home entertainment server provides consumers the benefits of personal video recording combined with the high quality video and wide programming selection of digital cable systems. The personal video recorder within the Explorer 8000 home entertainment server is powered by Maxtor’s QuickView consumer electronics hard drive. Scientific-Atlanta recently began shipping Explorer 8000 set-tops which are capable of recording up to 50 hours of programming, allowing multiple family members each to record their favorite programs. The Maxtor QuickView consumer electronics hard drive also enables the Explorer 8000 platform to share a wide range of entertainment related content throughout the home such as video, music, and digital images.

“We are very focused on enabling cable operators to generate maximum revenue and performance from their networks,” said Bob Van Orden, vice president, product strategy and management at Scientific-Atlanta. “We wanted to be sure that the hard drives in the Explorer 8000 set-tops would deliver the performance and reliability that our customers have come to expect from Scientific-Atlanta products.”

“Personal video recorders and STB/PVR combinations are one of the most exciting new category of consumer electronics products to hit the market. According to IDC, integrated and standalone PVRs are expected to reside in approximately one of four U.S. households by 2006,” stated Danielle Levitas, director of consumer devices and interactive services at IDC. Hard drive based consumer products are at the heart of the fastest growing group of new consumer products since the introduction of the DVD player.

“Scientific-Atlanta is a leader in equipment for the cable industry,” said Tex Schenkkan, senior vice president, consumer electronics and business development at Maxtor. “Combined with Maxtor’s leadership in hard disk drives for consumer applications, the reputation of MaxLabs integration services, and the strong development relationship between our companies, the customer gets the highest value and quality in this first ever cable PVR combo offering,” noted Schenkkan. “Maxtor’s consumer manufacturing, marketing and engineering experience enable us to help bring such innovative products to market.”
