Innodisk Develops Cost-effective iSLC Flash Technology

Innodisk Develops Cost-effective iSLC Flash Technology

PC components Mar 29,2013 0

Innodisk, a designer and manufacturer of SSDs for industrial applications, has developed a new flash memory storage technology called iSLC, which the company claims it approaches single-level cell (SLC) in terms of performance and reliability. While more economical, MLC NAND Flash lacks the reliability and performance needed for mission critical industrial applications. MLC's popularity has been mainly driven by price. Innodisk's in-house R&D firmware team developed iSLC, a cost-effective Flash Storage solution that maintains high performance, reliability and endurance comparable to SLC Technology.

Innodisk's iSLC technology divides into four states of 00, 10, 01, 11, and then increases the sensitivity of the delta between each level to enhance endurance and reliability. This means that iSLC is essentially performing at almost the same level as SLC NAND flash, and at the same time, providing a boost to Program/Erase (P/E) cycles. Inodisk claims that the average endurance of iSLC can surpass 30,000 Program/Erase (P/E) cycles, which increases the lifespan of the drive over MLC Flash by a multitude. SSDs with iSLC can sustain 32GB capacity drive writes per day for over 7 years.Additionally, write performance for iSLC is about 70% faster than MLC on SATA II.

The development offers a cost effective way for industrial applications, such as kiosks and POS, to perform at a high capacity while still keeping a tight control on expenditures.

Innodisk has iSLC integrated into many of the SATA II product lines. SATA III (6.0Gb/s) iSLC products will become available in the second quarter of 2013.
