Samsung Display Showcased Foldable Display Prototype At CES

Samsung Display Showcased Foldable Display Prototype At CES

Consumer Electronics Jan 13,2014 0

Samsung Display showcased the a foldable display prototype at last week's CES, showing the company's ambitious plans for the near future. The display, which was showcased not at Samsung's booth but at VIPs at the Encore Hotel in Las Vegas, U.S., was not just bendable as the one the company has been mass producing since last year. This one can be rolled up and spread out like a scroll.

According to KoreaIT News, the showcased display used an active-matrix (AM) organic light emitting diode (OLED) created using a plastic substrate measuring 5.68" in size. Made with a film-like polyimide (PI) substrate, this display was thin and folded like a paper.

Samsung Display had even applied a touch screen panel (TSP) made using a single layer metal mesh material to this display, in order to ensure the bending property of the screen.

Currently, thr Samsung Galaxy Round uses an indium tin oxide (ITO) film, which breaks easily and its conductivity decreases as resistance in the bent surface rises sharply.

It is not clear when Samsung will commercialize a foldable display. Last November, Samsung Electronics Vice Chairman Gwon O-hyeon announced a plan of foldable display launch next year at the Analyst Day event. "We will release a foldable display around 2015," said Vice Chairman Gwon.

To commercialize a foldable display, Samsung needs to ensure enough restoring force to prevent any functional and performance-related problems when the display is folded and opened many times.
