Google is pursuing a host of projects that combine hardware and software, including self-driving cars, delivery drones and Internet-connected thermostats. Now the company turns into healthcare. Google on Wednessay acquired Lift Labs, a startup that makes a tremor-canceling gadget to help people with Parkinson’s disease or essential tremor perform everyday tasks like eating.

Lift Labs' employees are joining Andrew Conrad’s Life Sciences team, which is part of Google X, Google’s research lab. Some researchers on Conrad’s team are already working on a medical hardware project called Iris, which is developing a contact lens that measures glucose in tears.

Lift Labs’ main product, the Liftware Stabilizer, is a small device that has spoons and a fork that clip on the end. Inside the tool, there’s a little computer running software algorithms and motion sensors that distinguish between intended movements, like bringing food to your mouth, and unintended movements, like the shaking that comes with Parkinson’s disease.
