Microsoft To Add 20nm Processor To New Xbox One

Microsoft To Add 20nm Processor To New Xbox One

Gaming Nov 3,2014 0

Microsoft may have already cut the Xbox One's price to $349 for the holidays, but there are hints that the game console will get a further price drop soon, due to a on a more efficient version of its processor. The coming upgrade was revealed in a resume of an AMD manager on LinkedIn, spotted by a user on Beyond3D's Forums before it was taken offline.

Engineer Daniel W. McConnell, which spent seven years at ATI before the acquisition of the GPU maker by AMD, wrote on its resume that he had "successfully planned and executed the first APU for Microsoft’s XBOX One Game Console in 28nm technology and a cost-reduced derivative in 20nm technology."

Obviously, the new system-on-a-chip will be built on TSMC's new 20nm transistor node

Currently the console's processing is driven by an AMD SoC with 2x 1.75 GHz quad-"Jaguar"core modules (8 total CPU cores) + 853 MHz Radeon Graphics GCN 1.1 (Graphics Core Next) module with 12x units w/ 64x cores per unit.

TSMC's information on the die shrink from 28 nm to 20 nm could result in an average power savings of 25 percent power. So the Xbox One with the new chip could be drawing around 90-100 watts, allowing for the installation of s smaller cooing fan inside and thus, a more compact console.

A similar die shrink for Sony's PlayStation 4 (PS4) shouldn't be too far behind.
