Microsoft Says Scorpio System will Not Offer Higher Frame Rates With Xbox One Games

Microsoft Says Scorpio System will Not Offer Higher Frame Rates With Xbox One Games

Gaming Jun 25,2016 0

Microsoft's powerful Scorpio entertainment system is coming next year and Microsoft provided some comments on playing regular Xbox One games to the new device. Speaking to Game Informer, Microsoft Studios general manager Shannon Loftis said that the New Scorio and the existing Xbox One console will have identical framerates for games they share.

"No, there wouldn’t be a frame rate difference, because typically the frame rate is determined by the game developer and what’s right for the gameplay mechanic," Loftis says. "You don’t necessarily want to create two different mechanics for two different configurations."

GI followed up asking if that meant games at lower framerates on Xbox One now would stay at lower framerates, despite the new capabilities of the Scorpio:

"Typically, yes. A good example is Killer Instinct, which is cross-play on PC and Xbox One. We have locked the frame rate to 60 frames per second," Loftis says. "We could do better on super high end PCs, but that ruins the competitive nature of it."

Microsoft also made it clear that there will be no "Xbox One games" and "Scorpio games" as separate entities, only games they share where one can take advantage of more power, the emphasis being on resolution (4K), it seems, while framerate appears to be off the table.

This means that game developers who may want to do a higher framerate on Scorpio, wouldn’t be allowed to do so.

Obviously, Microsoft hopes that the adoption of 4k TVs will be increased by next year, in order gamers to be able to fully enjoy Scorpio's terabyte power.

Microsoft is expected to provide more detals about Scorpio in the following months. For now, the only concrete things that seem clear are that Scorpio is pushing hard for 4K resolution, and that it will support some third party VR headsets.
