Oculus Rift S PC VR Headset Coming This Spring
Today at GDC, Facebook's Oculus unveiled Oculus Rift S — a new VR headset that combines built-in Oculus Insight tracking technology with the power of your PC.
Built on the Rift Platform, Rift S is launching this spring for $399 USD.
Rift S replaces the original Rift with an upgrade to a higher resolution display (2560 x 1440), improved optics, and a feature called Passthrough+, which gives you a glimpse of the real world around you without ever taking off the headset. Beyond the higher-resolution display and halo strap, the Rift S also features an additional fifth sensor not found on the Oculus Quest. Oculus says this is to “increase tracking volume to maximize compatibility with the existing Rift content library.”
Facebook partnered with Lenovo to design Rift S, drawing on their experience in the VR and AR space and feedback from the Lenovo Legion gaming community. Lenovo co-designed the Rift S for comfort, better weight distribution, and improved light blocking, as well as a simple, single-cable system. Rift S features the same integrated audio system as Oculus Quest and Oculus Go, with a headphone jack that lets you use your own headphones.
Like Quest, Rift S features Oculus Insight inside-out tracking technology. Using computer vision algorithms, Oculus Insight captures, traces, and navigates physical spaces in real time. The Rift S headset features five sensors to maximize tracking volume in support of the existing Rift library. Oculus Touch controllers, redesigned for inside-out tracking, bring familiar hand presence and input so you can grab, point, and gesture through the best of VR.
Facebook is also enabling a true stereo-correct passthrough feature, Passthrough+. It utilizes core Oculus runtime advancements, including ASW, to produce a comfortable experience with minimal depth disparity or performance impact.
New playables for Rift S are the following titles:
- Asgard’s Wrath
- Stormland
- Vacation Simulator
According to Rubin and Nate Mitchell, Oculus’ head of VR product, every existing and future game on the Rift platform will be playable on the Rift S. The company is also enabling cross-buy and cross-play features. That way, you can buy a Quest and, at a later date, upgrade to a Rift S and still have your entire library intact. Additionally, Rubin says, multiplayer games that support both platforms will let players play one another, regardless of whether you’re playing on a Quest or Rift device.
