Huawei Cancels New MateBook and MateBook X Pro Laptop Launch Under U.S. Pressure

Huawei Cancels New MateBook and MateBook X Pro Laptop Launch Under U.S. Pressure

PC components Jun 12,2019 0

The future holds for Huawei's Windows-based consumer laptop lineup has been in doubt since the Huawei ban in the United States, and now Huawei postpones the planned launch of this week's new MateBook.

Speaking to CNBC, Huawei Consumer Business Group CEO Richard Yu described the situation as "unfortunate."

Huawei's MateBook and MateBook X Pro laptops have been critically praised in the tech press and are two of the few Huawei consumer products being sold in the U.S.

Last month, however, Microsoft and Best Buy quietly pulling their MateBook listings from physical and virtual shelves.

Microsoft has not officially commented on its business relationship with Huawei. The assumption is that Microsoft is barred from supplying technical support or even sales of Windows 10 to Huawei for future notebooks. The issue could almost certainly also stem from lack of sufficient components from Intel and others.

This represents one of the first casualties of the looming trade war, which effectively blocks U.S. technology companies from doing business with the Chinese device manufacturer.

Huawei says its plans for future smartphones remain unchanged.

Contrary to the CNBC report, Global Times cites a source as saying that Huawei will release a new laptop product in July, which will have a differrnt configuration compared with previous series such as the MateBook and HonorBook. The new laptop will be powered by an ARM processor and will run based Windows, according to the report.
