Samsung Plans New Foldable Smartphone
Although Samsung has delayed the launch of the Galaxy Fold due to technical issues, the company's initial plan for foldable smartphones seems to remain unchanged.
Samsung is working on a new foldable smartphone featuring a 6.7-inch screen that folds up and down rather than side to side as the Galaxy Fold. While the Galaxy Fold looks like a tablet, the new foldable model focuses on portability.
Meanwhile, the launch of the already announced Galaxy Fold seems to be close, and its released is expected sometime next month. Samsung's Lee Jae-hyeok has already said that the company has working on quality issues that were raised. The protective film that was easily pilled off by press reviewers of the Galaxy Fold is said to have moved to the inner part of the device, and the issue where debris was accumulated near the device's hinge has been also ironed out by actually limiting the gap near the hinge.
Huawei, China’s biggest smartphone manufacturer, will also release the Mate X foldable smartphone in September.
Xiaomi is also developing its foldable smartphone.
Taiwanese and Chinese display manufacturers are also looking to enter foldable display market. Aside from Samsung Display, BOE, AUO, VisionOx, and CSOT are also developing foldable displays.
BOE is preparing to supply panels to Huawei for Mate X, while VisionOx is preparing to supply its panels to Xiaomi. Lenovo is also working with AUO on foldable smartphones, thatw ill include the a foldable version of Motorola's ‘Razr’ device.
