LG Chem to Add Fire Prevention System to ESS

LG Chem to Add Fire Prevention System to ESS

Consumer Electronics Nov 5,2019 0

After Samsung SDI has started applying a fire extinguishing system to its Energy Storage System (ESS,) LG Chem is also said to be preparing its own system for its offerings.

According to reports from South Korea, LG Chem has developed its own fire prevention system based on perch water and has also obtained an international certification for it. The compayn plans to supply the system to business sites that use ESS equipped with its batteries.

LG Chem’s fire prevention system is based on perch water method that uses a type of a sprinkler for its battery module. This system is spraying water on in case smoke or heat is detected. It does not extinguish fire by spraying water directly on the battery module, but instead it sprays water on the nearby cells in order to keep the temperature from rising and it ultimately minimize the possibility of big fire. Typically, such fires are caused when a short circuit occurs within a battery due to an outside impact or a defect. Then the temperature inside a battery cell increases and leads to fire.

LG Chem has obtained a UL9540A certification for its system -- the same certification rival Samsung SDI has won for its own proposal.

Obviously, the cost and the time required to intall the fire prevention system to existing ESS in significant for LG Chem.

Besides the fire prevention system, LG Chem has installed module fuses, surge protectors, and rack fuses to protect batteries from outside electric shock at its current business sites.
