In order to test the NVME drive we used the following configuration:

  • CPU: AMD Ryzen 9 7950X
  • Case: be quiet! Dark Base Pro 901
  • Case fans: 2x140 be quiet! Silent Wings 4 PWM
  • CPU Cooler: Noctua NH-U12A Chromax.Black + 2x120mm Stock Noctua fans
  • Motherboard: Asus ProArt X670E-CREATOR WIFI 2403 BIOS
  • Memory: 2x16GB AddLink Spider X5 DDR5-6000MHz (EXPO Profile)
  • PSU: be quiet! Dark Pro 13 1300Watt
  • Main Storage: Samsung 980Pro 1TB
  • VGA: MSI GeForce RTX 4090 SUPRIM X 24G
  • Operating system: Windows 11 x64 + latest motherboard/AMD chipset drivers installed (DirectStorage enabled drive)

We used the PCI-e Gen5 slot next to the main CPU area to install the drive and we used the build-in passive heatsink of the Asus motherboard. At max speeds, the drive gets hot up to 78 Celsius and shouldn't drop down performance, since the SMART Info shows that the drive will slowdown after 86 Celsius. It's best to use an air-cooling solution for this drive.

Starting our tests, we used many different CrystalDiskMark software versions to get how the drive would perform.

The latest CrystalDiskMark 8.0.5 promises up to 73.2GB/sec reading and 6.1GB/sec writing performance with sequential files.

In the latest ATTO Disk Benchmark 4.01.0f1 version, we got good results, up to 6.84GB/sec reading and 6.28GB/sec writing performance.

At the I/O Meter test, the Crucial P310 1TB NVME SSD showed medium performance with only 52.704,06 points, where Samsung 990 Pro can reach easily 150.000 points.

Passing to the writing performance, the P310 does use the full bandwidth of the PCIe Ge4 slot and wrote a 44GB file at only 7.7 sec.

Passing to the 200GB file, the reported writing speed was very low, with only 717.1MB/sec writing speed. The truth is that around the 150GB point, the drive was writing at full speed, however after that point, it dropped performance so if you are using higher than 150GB size files, maybe you need to look for a better and more expensive product.

More tests are available with the TxBENCH v0.96, which shows that the Crucial P310 NVME SSD can reach 6.8GB/sec reading and 5.8GB/sec writing speeds.

Lastly, the AS SSD Benchmark does give a good overall score with 10.914 points.
