Facebook Introduces Place Tips in News Feed
Starting from today, Facebook users in New York City will be able to test out a new feature called Place Tips. Place tips will show users useful and relevant info about the place they’re at. Facebook says tapping on place tips won’t post on Facebook or show anyone where users are.
When users tap on place tips, they’ll see a series of cards with info about the place they are at. If they choose to view place tips, they’ll find things like posts and photos their friends have shared with then about that place.
Users can also see information about the place, including posts from its Page, popular menu items and upcoming events.
Users can turn place tips off or on at any time in their settings or just hide tips about specific places.
Users's location is determined using cellular networks, Wi-Fi and GPS. In the coming weeks, Facebook will be testing place tips using these signals in places like Central Park, Brooklyn Bridge, Times Square, the Statue of Liberty and JFK Airport.
In certain places, Facebook is also testing place tips using Facebook Bluetooth beacons, which send a signal to phones that helps the company show users the right tips for the right place.
