Rumor Has Cheaper iPhone To Feature Qualcomm Snapdragon Processor, Wireless Charging

Rumor Has Cheaper iPhone To Feature Qualcomm Snapdragon Processor, Wireless Charging

Smartphones Mar 8,2013 0

The rumors related to a low-cost iPhone smatphone continue, and this time Apple is supposed to use a Qualcomm Snapdragon processor as well as add wireless charging capabilities to the next iPhone. An unnamed industry watcher quoted by the China Times as saying that Apple will release a more affordable version of its iPhone device and thay it will be based on a 28nm Snapdragon processor made by TSMC. This would be an anusual move for Apple, as the company is already making its own A-series processors for iOS devices. Compared to Qualcomm's Snapdragon SoCs - the 400 and 800 series - Apple's A-series chips lack of cellular, Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth on-chip functionalities. On the otehr hand, Qualcomm's solutions could bring LTE support.

The Chinese report also claims that Renesas, Toshiba, Elpida, Micron Technology, SK Hynix, and SanDisk will contribute with components in Apple's low-cost iPhone.

In a seperate report today, Digitimes.com said that the next iPhone wiould have wireless charging capabilities. However, the "S" versions of the iPhones released so far did not have significant design changes compared to the models they had succeeded. Since wireless charging would require Apple to make such changes to the current iPhone 5 design, the possibility to add the wireless charging function should be considered as weak.

Of course, Apple could surpise us with a new design, especially under the pressure of rival Samsung and the upcoming Galaxy S IV.
