TEAC Europe announces DV-516E (16X/48X) DVD-ROM!

TEAC Europe announces DV-516E (16X/48X) DVD-ROM!

General Interest Oct 8,2002 0

TEAC is one of the forerunners in the field of bulk memories and introduces a new product this week. With the DV-516E, TEAC presents a 16x-DVD-ROM drive that supports the "OSTA" multiread standard. As decisive further development of and supplement to the CD-ROM, the digital versatile disc (DVD) is increasingly being used for the extension of optical storage media. The new DVD standard, which complies both with the requirements of the "Studio Advisory Committee" of the film industry and with the IT specifications of the "Technical Working Group" is gaining increasing importance. But no matter whether DVD or CD-ROM, the new multifunctional drive can read both media. With a reading speed of 16x for DVDs and 48x for CD-ROMs, the DV-516E meets the latest speed standard on the market. But the advantages of a DVD speak for themselves. It is in particular the large storage capacity that makes the iridescent disk that attractive. It is possible to store up to 17 Gbyte (double-sided at two information levels) on it and up to 4.7 Gbyte (single-sided) for the PC user.

The drive supports interesting formats, such as the MPEG2 standard, which offers an excellent picture quality for movies. And the 5.1 channel-At3 surround sound ensures a great sound experience for audio applications. The DV-516E disk inter alia offers formats such as DVD+RWs, DVD-RWs and DVD-R as well as CD-DA (4-10X for play-audio, 16x for data extraction). Thanks to the multiread function, the DVD-Rom is compatible with all common CD standards.

The 512 KB data buffer ensures a steady and fast data transfer rate and supports the IDE mode PIO mode 4 / UDMA mode 33. Tests at the TEAC development laboratory verify an MTBF time of more than 100,000 POH (duty 20%). The high data transfer rate in CD-ROM mode CAV is 48x and in DVD mode CAV 16x. The medium access time for both DVD and CD-ROM is 85 ms. The drive is supplied in a kit priced 59,- Euro.

Multiread: New standard for CD and DVD

No more problems when changing from CD to DVD: the representatives of the Optical Storage Technology Association, OSTA for short, have agreed on the multiread standard. Thanks to this specification for optical drives, it is possible to read audio CDs, CD-ROMs, CD-recordables and CD-rewritables on CD and DVD drives. ¹According to analyst Ray Freeman’s estimation, this decision will lead to increased sales of CDs and DVDs during the next two years. Thanks to multiread, the user will no longer have to be afraid of any data loss when switching over from CD-ROM to DVD.
