Pioneer aims to take largest share in PDP market

Pioneer aims to take largest share in PDP market

Consumer Electronics Mar 30,2005 0

Pioneer Corp indicated its aims within the PDP business at a presentation meeting on March 23, 2005, saying, "We aim to win the largest share in the market for high-end PDPs with the resolution of XGA and more." As indicated by Hitachi Ltd's acquirement of Fujitsu Ltd's PDP business as its subsidiary and the business alliance formation by Hitachi and Matsushita Electric Industrial Co, Ltd, M&A has recently been accelerated in the PDP industry, with aims to expand business scale and to integrate technologies. Pioneer's move has been closely watched amid these circumstances. The company, however, denied the possibility of participating in the collaboration between Hitachi and Matsushita, saying, "We will pursue the business independently."

Current PDP output capacity at Pioneer is 1.1 million units per year. The company aims to boost this to 1.4 million units per year by around 2007 through efforts such as improving the production efficiency. Pioneer insisted that, "We can secure the top share in the market for high-end PDPs with the resolution of XGA and more for the short term with our production volume." The company said it has no plans to build a new plant to boost output capacity at the moment.

Matsushita, for example, is planning to boost its PDP output capacity to 4.8 million units per year in FY2007, from a total of 1.08 million units produced in FY2004. Compared to such moves at other companies, it is likely that Pioneer will largely fall behind other companies in terms of PDP production volume in 2-3 years.
