Project Tango's World-sensing Cameras To Come In Qualcomm's Reference Phone Designs

Project Tango's World-sensing Cameras To Come In Qualcomm's Reference Phone Designs

Smartphones May 29,2015 0

Qualcomm today announced at Google I/O that its Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 processor will be the base of Google's next generation Project Tango smartphone development platform. Project Tango devices combine the camera, gyroscope, and accelerometer to estimate six degrees of freedom motion tracking, providing developers the ability to track 3D motion of a device while simultaneously creating a map of the environment. This capability is useful for applications such as real-world 3D gaming, indoor navigation, and virtual and augmented reality experiences.

The development platform will be available for purchase in Q3 2015.

The Snapdragon 810 processor features the Qualcomm Adreno 430 GPU, which offers support for camera image and video post-processing, hardware tessellation, geometry shaders and programmable blending, as well as advanced GPU security for secure composition and management of video and other multimedia. The Snapdragon 810 processor also supports superior camera functionality, including dual 14-bit Image Signal Processors (ISP) with fast autofocus, depth sensing, and advanced imaging software that helps enable advanced camera features particularly in low light environments. 4K HEVC Ultra HD video encoding and decoding is also supported by Snapdragon 810.

Developers will be able to utilize tools from Qualcomm Developer Network to take advantage of features included in the Snapdragon 810 processor and enhance the performance of Android applications, such as access to the Qualcomm Hexagon DSP via the Hexagon SDK as well as the Qualcomm Vuforia mobile vision platform.

The first Tango phones will be given to developers and devices makers for now.

Google announced yesterday that developers could buy Project Tango development kits for $512 starting next week. However, we are still talking about a 7-inch tablet with a three cameras on its back. Bringing th technology to a smartphone would be more convenient for developers to use it and could pave the way for the project to eventually find its way to consumers.
