Seagate SAVVIO Hard Drives to be Incorporated in IBM EServer

Seagate SAVVIO Hard Drives to be Incorporated in IBM EServer

Enterprise & IT Aug 5,2004 0

Seagate's 2.5-inch Savvio disc drive enables pure enterprise-class RAID performance and reliability

Seagate Technology today announced that IBM will be the first to market with its new IBM eServer™ xSeries 1U systems using Seagate Savvio 2.5-inch enterprise disc drives. The Seagate Savvio drives will be integrated into IBM xSeries 336 servers, making them the world's first 1U servers with four drives and enabling the capability for RAID 0, 1, and 5 functionality. Current 1U servers can only perform basic mirroring, due to the limitation of having space for only two drives. As the world's first 2.5-inch enterprise disc drive, Seagate Savvio delivers an improved return on investment (ROI) result for IT professionals because of its faster performance, improved space utilization and reduced infrastructure requirements.

"Customers are demanding systems that provide the utmost reliability and performance so they can reap the full benefits of the space and scalability advantages offered with 1U servers," said Alex Yost, IBM's director of Product Marketing for IBM eServer ™ xSeries. "IBM is pleased to be working with Seagate to be the first to deliver Savvio 2.5-inch enterprise drive technology for 1U servers, which allows us to provide our customers the performance advantage of RAID on a 1U platform."

"Using Seagate Savvio, IBM's servers will be able to quickly and reliably handle the increased transactional demands of today's businesses," said Jeff Loebbaka, Seagate vice president of Global Marketing. "IBM's use of Savvio drives reaffirms Seagate's leadership in driving the 2.5-inch enterprise form factor transition and IBM's commitment to delivering best-in-class solutions that are tailored for the needs of their customers."

IBM will begin shipping Seagate Savvio drives within IBM xSeries 336 servers in early September. For more information about IBM enterprise storage solutions, visit www.ibm.com. For more information about Seagate and its family of enterprise disc products, visit www.seagate.com.

About Seagate Savvio
Seagate Savvio disc drives are just one of many examples of Seagate's unique capability to deliver leading-edge products across the broadest range of storage markets and applications. From enterprise, PC, mobile and CE markets, using a range of interface choices and multiple form factors, Seagate is best positioned to deliver the widest range of storage solutions that the market demands.

Seagate Savvio disc drives enable a new category of high I/O density storage solutions designed to provide space-constrained Fortune 2000 data centers with higher IOPS (I/O per second) performance in small form factor system configurations with the highest levels of reliability.

Seagate Savvio offers an unmatched combination of features including its smaller size, lower power consumption, fast seek times and the industry's highest reliability. This makes Savvio the ideal storage solution for high I/O density hardware platforms, including new servers, storage arrays and blade servers.

Seagate Savvio is a true enterprise-class drive, designed specifically to meet the demanding requirements of enterprise applications. In addition to its fast 10,000-rpm spin speed and industry sweet-spot capacity choices of 36-and 73-Gbyte capacities, the Savvio disc drive also has an impressive reliability specification of 1.4 million hours MTBF. And unlike MTBF testing for ATA and SATA disc drives based on desktop-environment conditions, Savvio's reliability rating is specified based on testing in a 7/24/365 100% duty cycle enterprise-class workload environment and therefore is ideally suited for meeting the needs of IT professionals challenged by continuing server and storage consolidation.
