Cirrus Logic Software Supports Video Recording Onto Multiple DVD Media Formats

Cirrus Logic Software Supports Video Recording Onto Multiple DVD Media Formats

Optical Storage Oct 15,2004 0

Consistent Support for Both DVD +R/RW, -R/RW DVD Disc Media to Reduce Consumer Confusion and Help End Format War Cirrus Logic Inc. (Nasdaq:CRUS) has implemented software into its DVD recording reference designs that allows consumers to record content onto either the DVD +R/RW or DVD -R/RW media formats. This capability will help eliminate the purchasing confusion many consumers face when selecting among the various DVD recording formats and, in turn, help lower the return rates of products into the retail channel.

"The +R/RW and -R/RW formats are the most popular global format standards for recording content onto DVD media," said Jack Guedj, vice president of Video Products Marketing, Cirrus Logic. "By giving consumers the ability to record to either type of DVD disc media, we're putting an end to the format war and helping eliminate some of the confusion that has hindered an even greater rate of growth for DVD recorders."

Support for multiple media recording formats is the newest example of Cirrus Logic's flexible software architecture, which allows OEMs to customize their product lines by selecting various software "modules" that enable multiple features, such as FLASH-card reader support or user interface and playback of MP3 music libraries.

"While DVD player shipments are leveling off, DVD recorder growth is expected to keep dramatically increasing over the next several years," said Michelle Abraham, senior analyst, Converging Markets & Technologies, In-Stat/MDR. "As prices continue to decline, and more manufacturers enter the market, there is a definite need for solutions, such as Cirrus Logic's DVD recording platforms, that help to eliminate consumer confusion over multiple DVD formats."

Cirrus Logic's DVD recording platforms offer manufacturers a complete product solution with a low-cost bill of materials, flexible software, support for multiple recording standards and an enhanced user interface. These features are helping leading manufacturers continue to develop the next generation of easier-to-use and lower-priced DVD recorders, which industry analysts expect will stimulate consumer demand for DVD recorders over the next several years.
