Crucial T705 2TB NVME White
3. Conclusion
Crucial has a strong presence at the PCIe Gen5 race, introducing among the first real retail products. Micron has the memory banks and Phison has the onboard controller, introducing high reading/writing speeds, for specific audiences. The T705 series comes in either a black or white finish, and both perform the same. From our tests, the T705 is a solid performer, provided that it has a good airflow above the passive heatsink (meaning a direct fan blow), else during intensive reading/writing tasks, thermal throttle will occur.
Another question is that to benefit from such increased reading/writing speeds, you might need to have other PCIe Gen5 NVMEs at the same system and "special" software like Fast Copy, since Windows internal Read/Copy mechanism doesn't seem to benefit (yet) and using the full bandwidth of such drives. Another issue would be how to cool both PCIe Gen5 drives, since most currently sold motherboards have a "free" PCIe Gen5 slot available to use with an air cooler, however, the second PCIe Gen5 slot would be under the passive motherboard heatsink, which isn't very easy to cool... The final issue would be also the very high retail prices of PCIe Gen5 drives, the Crucial T705 Limited Edition with 2TB of capacity, currently sells at the official website for 669.96 Euro, meaning isn't very appealing to end users.
To summarize this review, we find the Crucial T705 to be a very good product and we hope in the next version, Crucial will add some kind of air cooler (even optional inside the package) to help dame the increased heat that is being produced when seriously using the product. Most users will find currently sold PCIe Gen4 drives, like the Crucial T500 2TB NVME (Gen4) to be reasonably priced and be a better solution after all. The Crucial T705 2TB White Limited Edition product comes with 5 years of legendary Crucial warranty and 1200TBW writing endurance for really enthusiast users.
