Toshiba Announces New HDD products At CES 2006
Toshiba USA announced many new products at the CES 2006 show, including 80GB 1.8-inchand 10GB 0.85-inch PMR HDD
- 80GB 1.8-inch PMR HDD Currently Shipping in Digital Music and Notebook Applications
Toshiba has expanded its family of HDDs based on perpendicular magnetic recording (PMR) with shipments of 80GB 1.8-inch HDDs for consumer electronics (CE) devices and mobile computers. The dual-platter MK8007GAH HDD is currently shipping in digital music and notebook applications and follows the 40GB PMR drive Toshiba announced in August 2005.
PMR is a breakthrough technology that sets new benchmarks for data density and is based on three key elements: 1) a new magnetic disk structured to support perpendicular recording, 2) a new high-performance perpendicular magnetic head and 3) disk and head integration technology that maximizes their combined performance. Toshiba continues to lead the storage industry with the first commercialized PMR HDD in 2005, providing unsurpassed recording density and high operating reliability on its 1.8-inch HDD platform.
Toshiba's 1.8-inch PMR HDD offers the highest areal density currently on the market at 206 megabits per square millimeter(1) (133 gigabits per square inch). The 80GB drive delivers high-capacity storage for robust music, video and photo applications on MP3 players, mobile phones, digital cameras, handheld navigation devices and more. With this amount of storage, MP3 devices can hold up to 20,000 songs or 36 hours of DVD-quality video. Product Availability: Now Shipping
- 0.85-Inch Hard Disk Drive Capacity to 10GB Using Perpendicular Magnetic Recording
Toshiba announced it will extend its perpendicular magnetic recording (PMR) leadership to the 0.85-inch hard disk drive, enabling capacity around the 10GB level with industry-leading areal density targeted at 200 gigabits per square inch.
Incorporating Toshiba's breakthrough PMR technology onto the world's smallest HDD will transform mobile phones into complete entertainment and information devices with music, video and GPS mapping. In addition, this thumb-sized, high-capacity drive will propel the continued miniaturization of digital music players, handheld GPS systems and other devices, while increasing capabilities for more music, video and maps.
Noted as the world's smallest HDD in the Guinness World Records(TM) book, Toshiba's 0.85-inch HDD is currently shipping in a 4GB capacity. The company will now extend PMR to the 0.85-inch form factor with plans for high-capacity drives in 2007. Toshiba was the first company in the storage industry to commercialize and ship PMR in 2005, providing unsurpassed recording density and high operating reliability on its 1.8-inch HDD platform.
