Toshiba Launches New High Capacity 1.8-inch HDD

Toshiba Launches New High Capacity 1.8-inch HDD

PC components Jan 25,2011 0

Toshiba Storage Device Division today announced its largest capacity 1.8-inch (4.6cm) form factor HDD in a 5mm height to date. At 220 GB the MK2239GSL single platter SATA HDD offers the highest capacity per space available in a 1.8-inch (4.6cm) form factor HDD. Its super slim frame of just 5mm makes the MK2239GSL ideal for use in compact mobile devices. These include digital video recorders (DVC), personal media players and compact external HDDs as well as media tablets, notebook PCs, mini-notebooks and ruggedised laptop PCs.

Toshiba has shipped over 80 million 1.8-inch HDDs to date. A recent report from IDC shows that in Q3 2010, Toshiba shipped over 92 per cent of the 1.8-inch HDDs worldwide, retaining its number one market share position since entering the market in 2000.

The MK2239GSL is part of a new line of 1.8-inch (4.6cm) HDDs, which are the first to be developed with LIF SATA connector, enabling Toshiba to produce a drive up to 10 per cent smaller foot print than those with micro SATA connector. The MKxx39GSL HDD series has also been developed using long sector formatting, an advanced format technology that Toshiba has used since 2007 due to its ability to increase storage capabilities. This combination of both LIF SATA and long sector formatting enables Toshiba to produce HDDs that provide both a high quality performance and large capacity, yet are still portable and compact.

The MKxx39GSL line of HDDs includes the following products: the MK1639GSL, the MK2039GSL and the MK2239GSL, all with capacities of 160GB, 200GB and 220GB respectively. However, these large capacities do not mean a compromise on energy efficiency. With an energy consumption efficiency of 0.0016W/GB, the MK2239GSL uses 30 per cent less power than previous models such as the MK1634GSL. It not only surpasses its 1.8-inch predecessor in energy efficiency, but also in 2.5-inch form factor as well. The lower power consumption of the MK2239GSL will increase battery life, essential for mobile multimedia devices such as notebook PCs or tablets, which are often used to view video and TV content and play music, requiring longer battery durability.

Weighing just 48 grams, it can withstand up to 1,500 Gs of non-operational shock and 600Gs operational shock, a vibration robustness that surpasses even 2.5-inch form factor durability. Each HDD also has a high buffer memory of 16MB and interface transfer rate of 1.5 Gb/sec.

The MKxx39GSL will be readily available from February 2011.
