LG Hitachi Showcases Slim-type Hybrid Optical Disc Drive, 4X Portable BDXL Drive at Computex

LG Hitachi Showcases Slim-type Hybrid Optical Disc Drive, 4X Portable BDXL Drive at Computex

Optical Storage Jun 2,2011 0

LG Hitachi Ltd. has on display at Computex 2011 a Hybrid slim-type optical BD/DVD combo drive, which features an 8GB SSD on board as well as the first 4x BDXL burner at Computex 2011. The BP20N is an external USB 2.0 BDXL writer, capable of burning up to up to 128 Gbytes on a single BDXL Quad Layer disc. Specifically, the drive is able to burn and read 3-layer and 4-layer BD-R XL (100GB and 128GB) discs at 4X.

The company revised the Hybrid Drive to offer higher performance and a smaller form factor for thin laptop designs. Now in its second generation, the Hybrid Drive combines a Blu-ray optical drive with flash memory--serving as a solid state disk--on one circuit board. The new Hybrid model also uses only one SATA 6 Gbps connector, and is now the size of a standard laptop drive. The company is presenting the Hybrid ODD - X2, a slim-type Blu-ray disc combo drive with an 8GB SSD onboard. As an ODD, the device reads BD-ROM (SL/DL), BD-R/RE (SL/DL) BD-R LTH and BD-Video discs at 4.8X, while it also burns DVD+R/-R at 8X, DVD+R/-R DL at 4X, DVD-RAM at 5X, DVD-RW at 6X and DVD+RW at 8X. It is also taking advantage of its 8GB SSD to offer fast application loading and PC booting as well as increased error corrrection capabilities with optical disc media.

The Hybrid drive will be released in July and will be available to LG Hitachi's OEM partners in ultra slim notebooks.
