Toshiba Unveils First 19nm SSDs
Toshiba has today announced the THNSNF family of solid state drives (SSDs), the word's first SSDs based on a 19nm NAND Flash memory.
Designed for high end notebooks, tablets, PCs, all-in-one desktop computers as well as industrial PC applications, the THNSNF range boast a high capacity of up to 512 GB and are available in a range of sizes:
THNSNFxxxGBSS (9.5mm SATA 6Gb/s height, 64, 128, 256, 512 GB), THNSNFxxxGCSS (7.0mm 6Gb/s height, 64, 128, 256, 512 GB) and the THNSNFxxxGMCS (mSATA, 64, 128, 256GB).
The drives utilize Toshiba's Multi-Level Cell (MLC) 19nm NAND technology and are twice as fast as the the company's previous generation of SSDs, offering read transfer rate of 524 MB/s and write transfer rate of up to 461 MB/s.
The THNSNF SSDs also features Toshiba's QSBC (Quadruple Swing-By Code), an efficient Error Correction Code (ECC) protecting against any read errors in the device. With an additional 'data corrupt protection' feature, the THNSNF SSDs range protects any data which is being moved internally, against unexpected power-loss and write errors.
Furthermore, deterministic zeroing TRIM function is supported. This allows the host operating system to inform the SSD about data blocks which are no longer in use, so they can be wiped internally. With built in 'read only mode', users will still be able to access their data should the drive become damaged or lose write ability.
The THNSNF series also utilises Advanced Power Management (APM) technology to control energy consumption levels, essential in energy-sensitive applications. The drives also boast the great energy efficiency levels in the world - by using MobileMark 2007 Workload, each drives consumes less than 0.1W of power.
Volume production of the THNSNF family of drives will start in August 2012.
