LaCie Ships World's Fastest External Drive

LaCie Ships World's Fastest External Drive

PC components Mar 11,2014 0

LaCie today announced the availability of the fastest consumer-grade portable, external drive -- the LaCie Little Big Disk, featuring Thunderbolt 2 and two PCIe Gen.2 solid state drives (SSDs). The drive delivers speeds up to 1,375 MB/s and fits in a laptop bag, making it a portable solution for editing 4K video in the field.

To achieve the full potential of Thunderbolt 2 speeds, LaCie engineered the Little Big Disk with a pair of 500 GB PCIe Gen 2 SSDs configured in a RAID 0. It's possible to push the boundaries of the technology even further by daisy chaining two LaCie Little Big Disks to achieve speeds faster than the maximum Thunderbolt 2 transfer rate. By connecting them in parallel to Apple's new Mac Pro, they can deliver speeds up to 2,600 MB/s.

Thanks to its two Thunderbolt 2 ports, professionals can daisy chain up to five LaCie Little Big Disks plus a 4K display, and connect them to a computer via a single cable.

LaCie added two heat-dissipating aluminum plates in addition to a larger, thermoregulated fan. This means that the fan only turns on when necessary, to keep opperation noise down.

The new Little Big Disk, featuring Thunderbolt 2, is available in 1TB SSD capacity through the LaCie Online Store and LaCie Resellers starting at $1299.99 (MSRP). Thunderbolt 2 is compatible with the same cables and connectors as first?generation Thunderbolt. Lacie offers a three-year limited warranty for the drive.
