Plextor's ML, 24x SCSI and DVD-R recorders :-)
or which company you wish to keep reading interesting news? I think i have read your mind... Let’s start!
1) Our original post about Plextor's ML recorder (PX-ML3630) had few errors in the posted specs, as we expected. The current information says that, possible, the reading speed will increased up to 40x. That will enable faster reading times in both CD and (3X) [ML] formats. Our announce shipping date for December 2001, seems early. Q1 of 2002 is more realistic (February 2002 seems the magic month). ML recorders will support reading of DVD format. We don’t know if the first batch of drives will include it or not. We will know in about one month, when the official press release come out :)
The real question here is how much succeful ML format would be, with so many DVD+RW drives shipping next month. Original plans supposed to have ML recorders out in November of 2001! The 6 months of delay could be proven fatal for ML recording format...
2) Plextor 24x SCSI recorder. Will it come? Yes/No/When? The answer is easy according to Plextor:
"...Our PleXWriter 12/10/32S is the last model that we have developed with a SCSI interface. We have no plans to develop faster SCSI burners. Due to BURN-Proof technology, the demand for SCSI burners decreased a lot. Regarding our 40-speed CD-Rom drive. Also this product will be the last SCSI CD-Rom drive from Plextor. Of course this does not mean that we do not support these products anymore. As long has there will be drives in the market, we will help the customer in the best possible way..."
3) Plextor "DVD-R". A dream comes true? Possible yes. “Shinano Kenshi”, the mother company of Plextor, is a listed member of the new "Recordable DVD Council".
As the company states "...We are preparing for next wave of multimedia information devices with the development of new products, using DVD technology...". The upcoming Plextor DVD-R recorder will support for sure DVD-R (maybe DVD-RW also?) and of course CD(-R/RW) format(s). When you should expect it? We would say add at least 8-10 months. We hope by the end of this year something to be announced officially. I hope you are as much excited as we are :-)
