Huawei MateBook 13 and MediaPad M5 Lite Come to the US
Huawei brings its latest MateBook 13 ultraportable laptop and the MediaPad M5 Lite tablets to the US.
Announced at CES 2019, the MateBook 13 resembles a slightly shrunken version of the Matebook X Pro, with a satin finish on its aluminum alloy body and diamond-cut edges. It features a 13-inch 2,160x1,440 touchscreen with 100 percent sRGB gamut coverage, and two USB-C ports for connections.
The laptop is powered by the latest Intel Core i5 or i7 U series processors, and the higher-end i7 model comes equipped with the higher-power version of the Nvidia MX150 graphics processor.
The MateBook 13 will be available at the end of January starting at $1,000 with integrated graphics and $1,300 for the model with discrete.
The MediaPad M5 Lite Android tablet has a 10.1-inch 1080p screen and comes with the M-Pen Lite stylus, which offers 2,048-levels of pressure compared to the regular M5's 4,096. The chipset is also lower down the stack, as rather than the Kirin 960 these parts have the Kirin 659: an octa-core A53 variant. It will also have a slightly lighter price of $299 when it ships at the end of January.
On the M5 Lite there is a quad speaker system developed in partnership with harmon/kardon, and the 3.5mm headphone jack supports Dolby Atmos. The M5 Lite will be offered as a Wi-Fi model only, but the large size allows for a 7500 mAh battery which should give 10-12 hours of video playback time and 40 days of standby. Memory and storage is fixed at 3GB and 32GB respectively, however there is a microSD card slot good for up to 256GB. Cameras are listed as 8MP for both front and rear.
Designed for kids, the tablet features parental time limit controls and a dedicated "Kids Corner" interface. It can also detect when the tablet is too close to a face, the ambient light is below a certain threshold or if the tablet's being used at an "unhealthy" angle, such as overhead. It will then pop up a little warning animation in the corner, which expands to the entire screen if not heeded.
