LaCie Unveils DVD Burner With LightScribe Direct Disc Labeling Technology

LaCie Unveils DVD Burner With LightScribe Direct Disc Labeling Technology

Optical Storage Jan 11,2005 0

LaCie and LightScribe are partnering to offer the first direct disc labeling drive for both Macs and PCs. Specially configured LaCie d2 DVD±RW Double Layer burners now offer the ability to burn precise, iridescent labels with desired text and graphics using the same laser that burns the data. This innovative LightScribe Direct Disc Labeling technology means people no longer have to use printers, permanent markers or adhesive labeling to develop and burn creative designs onto their CDs and DVDs.

LightScribe uses the LaCie d2 DVD±RW Double Layer drive's existing laser to deliver precisely controlled light energy to the disc through an innovative circular writing system. The light energy causes a visible, chemical change in the dye coating. The result is a high-resolution label image of art, text or photos. Because the labels are laser etched in a coating applied during disc manufacture, no ink or adhesive labels are required.

The LaCie d2 DVD±RW Double Layer supports burning a full 4.7GB DVD in about five minutes, as well as burning to double layer discs that offer twice the capacity. Easy-to-use DVD creation software allows people to create movies in a matter of minutes complete with menus, thumbnails and backgrounds. With the LightScribe technology, customers can burn a custom label that requires no ink supplies, can be burned anywhere and does not take up data space or peel off in the disc drive.

"LaCie's fastest and most durable d2 DVD burner paired with the innovative LightScribe technology delivers the best burning and personalization available," says Salem Tirane, LaCie Product Manager. "We're pleased to partner with LightScribe to make this happen."

"We're excited to partner with LaCie to deliver the benefits of LightScribe Direct Disc labeling," says Kent Henscheid, Marketing Manager for LightScribe. "The new LightScribe-enabled LaCie d2 DVD drive will give customers using a PC or a Macintosh the ability to create no-hassle, professional quality labels directly onto their CDs and DVDs."
