The Crucial X8 series even isn't entirely a new model, the 4TB variant was introduced last year and boosted capacities up to 4TB of useable storage. The need for increased external/portable flash memory has pushed the limits for memory vendors and Crucial has packed in a small package of 4TB and with an affordable price as well.

This is a very small drive and lightweight so it can be your next best friend. The design is slick, the build quality top and the retail package includes all you need to get things started. The included TypeC-to-C cable is short and Crucial should have included a longer cable. There is also a USB Type-A adapter included as well for wide compatibility. Due to the exFAT file system, the Crucial X8 4TB can be used either on PC/MAC/Playstation systems or even on Linux-compatible devices as well. Xbox users probably will be disappointed, since users have reported that the compatibility isn't there. The performance of the drive seems very good and while we didn't reach the advertised 1050MB/sec reading performance, for most of our tests, we can say that performance was very good. The drive due to its high capacity is expected to be filled with many data. When we filled up the drive with data of more than 1TB, the drive introduced weird slowdowns, which were confirmed in two different systems. We cannot be sure if that is a problem with our specific sample or some kind of incompatibility. Till today no newer firmware exists to rest the drive.

Concluding this review, the Crucial X8 4TB drive is a nice product for portable warriors, who wish to have wide compatibility between various devices/systems. The competition in this market is high between Crucial and Samsung, and the X8 4TB model is cheaper than the corresponding Samsung model that however includes 256-bit AES encryption with password protection. On the other hand, the Crucial X8 4TB can be used with Windows's Bitlocker Go (or Mac OS's FileVault) to have software encryption, which is a must for portable users. The current price of the Crucial X8 4TB drive is around ~$220.00 at Crucial's website and Crucial frequently drops prices so keep an eye on the official website.
