Fujitsu Announces Availability of 2.3GB Capacity Magneto-Optical Drives
Fujitsu Computer Products of America, Inc. (FCPA), a leading provider of removable storage solutions, today announced volume availability of its 2.3GB magneto-optical (MO) disk drive, one of the most affordable and highest-capacity 3.5-inch removable storage solutions available today.
"We are pleased to announce the full, volume availability of Fujitsu’s 2.3GB MO bare drives for integrators through our authorized dealers," said Dan Dalton, director of optical products, Fujitsu Computer Products of America. "Fujitsu is delivering the removable storage industry’s highest capacity 3.5-inch MO drives at aggressive price points and we are excited about the interest we are receiving from customers."
Dalton added that several leading medical and telecommunications companies are currently evaluating MO technology as a potential replacement for other legacy solutions. The new drive, which began shipping last month, is available through FCPA’s authorized distributors for MO products including: Arrow Electronics, Inc., Avnet, Inc., Ingram Micro Inc., Microland Group, and Tech Data Corporation.
"Score another win for Fujitsu MO," said electronics expert Steve Kruschen, who is known to millions of television viewers as Mr. Gadget®. "The new Fujitsu 2.3GB MO drive is both a useful and affordable investment, for companies that need rugged and reliable removable storage options, and also for consumers who want the same features in their home office or with their personal computers, both Macs and PCs. Fujitsu MO technology is nearly indestructible, with far better read/write performance than other removable storage options, and it delivers all of this at prices that are better than ever."
"Sort of makes you think, doesn't it? What could YOU do with MO?" said Mr. Gadget. "Add it up and you will see what I already know -- Fujitsu MO deserves your attention."
The new Fujitsu MO drives, which have long been popular within the Mac community, have full native compatibility with the latest Mac OS X v10.1 operating system, as well as compatibility with Microsoft® Windows® platforms.
With fifth-generation MO technology from Fujitsu, the 2.3GB MO drive nearly doubles the capacity of its predecessor, the 1.3GB line of MO drives. As with all Fujitsu MO drives, the 2.3GB drive is backward-compatible and can read and write to all 3.5-inch MO media capacities, including 1.3GB, 640MB, 540MB, 230MB and 128MB, as well as Over-Write disks (640MB and 540MB). The new drive also provides 19ms seek time, data transfer rates up to 8MB/sec and an 8MB buffer, making it ideal for intensive audio, video and graphic applications. In addition, the MO solutions help facilitate high-speed file backup for commercial systems such as telephone/PBX, medical and data acquisition systems.
The 2.3GB drives, MCJ3230AP (IDE) and MCJ3230SS (SCSI), – and 2.3GB MO disks – are available now through FCPA’s distribution channel. Retail configurations of the same drive – to be known as the Fujitsu DynaMO 2300 -- will be available later this year.
