Sony reels in small business market with DAT 72 media

Sony reels in small business market with DAT 72 media

General Interest Dec 11,2003 0

Sony Electronics is catering to the storage needs of small businesses with its new DAT 72 media cartridges, which will begin shipping this month. The 4mm DAT 72 is being added to Sony'sline of data media. Sony's current family of more than 20 data media formats ranges from 8mm to half-inch tape storage cartridges, and encompasses both metal evaporated and metal particle media technologies.

With 36 gigabytes (GB) of native storage capacity and an 11GB per hour native data transfer rate, Sony DAT 72 media suits the backup needs of small and medium-sized businesses. It can protect irreplaceable data residing on workstations or small office servers.

Sony co-developed the DDS standard - the basis for DAT 72 technology - with Hewlett-Packard in 1987. Sony is already a leading supplier of DDS-1 through DDS-4 data media, which are all backward read and write compatible with previous-generation drives. Sony DAT 72 media allows current DDS owners to protect their investments, while increasing their capacity point.

Before receiving verification from H-P to brandish the official DAT 72 logo, Sony DAT 72 media underwent exhaustive testing. As a result, end-users can be confident that Sony DAT 72 media is fully compatible with all DAT 72 drives.

Sony DAT 72 media delivers straightforward backup by storing up to 36 GB of native data per cartridge. For condensed backup windows, DAT 72 delivers a maximum native transfer speed of up to 11 GB per hour.

Key Sony DAT 72 media features and technologies include:

- Up to 72 GB of storage capacity per tape (with 2:1 compression);
- Helical-scan recording technique for high track density and low tape stress; (Helical-scan technology produces tape speeds that are 100 times slower than linear recording methods, although data transfer rates remain fast at 11 GB per hour.)
- Anti-static resin on the cartridge lid protects the tape from dust particles and keeps the interior clean;
- High Heat Proof (HHP) cartridge shell adds reliability, while a high-strength lid guards against accidental breakage;
- Automatic head cleaning to diminish head clogging (when used in conjunction with a cleaning tape); and
- Special tape with an estimated archival life of more than 30 years.

Availability

Sony DAT 72 media cartridges will be available for purchase this month through wholesale distributors, resellers, VARs and direct marketers nationwide for a suggested retail price of $34.95.
