Ritek to make advanced optical discs for Teijin

Ritek to make advanced optical discs for Teijin

General Interest May 8,2001 0

"...Ritek has inked an agreement to produce magneto-optical (MO) discs for Teijin Japan, so as to improve its position in the industry by allying with a major player. According to Akihiro Okata, a Teijin executive in charge of new product operation, Ritek is Teijin's only contract manufacturer in Taiwan. Okata noted that Ritek's advance in MO-disc processing technology was the major reason his company decided to place outsourcing orders with Ritek. Ritek has licensed MO technology from Sony, and has begun producing discs for Sony.

The MO disc features a substrate of polycarbonate and a thin film developed using Teijin's high-precision processing and thin-film technologies. The disc is available in two sizes, 3.5-inch and 5.25-inch sizes. The disc is noted for its large storage capacity for high-resolution picture files, efficiency, high resistance to vibration, and long-life data storage.

Okata said that both companies will expand their cooperation to include CD-R, DVD-R, and random access memory DVD (DVD-RAM). He said Ritek will begin to deliver discs to Teijin in late May or early June. Ritek CEO T.J. Yieh, noted that the cooperation would help upgrade research and development capabilities and the competitiveness of both companies. He added that Ritek plans to soon use its MO technology to produce the disc with a memory capacity of 1.3GB..." NULL
